The human body needs sodium. But many of us consume twice the preferred daily limit of 1500 mg. Most of us know that too much sodium can raise blood pressure and, as a result, increase the risk for heart disease and stroke. But did you know that your saltshaker is only a part of the problem? It contributes about 20% of the salt we consume but the rest comes from processed foods. You can help by avoiding breaded or fried foods, keep salad dressing on the side, use sea salt or kosher salt (lower in sodium), and read food labels. Pick foods with low sodium and then add low sodium seasonings and spices to boost flavor.
